How to Treat ADHD Symptoms Naturally

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is a condition that can hinder concentration and cause uncontrollable activity, such as the inability to sit still for long periods of time. Whether a child or an adult is diagnosed with ADHD, the effects can be frustrating and often disheartening, especially if traditional treatments are unsuccessful. But over-the-counter or prescription drugs are not the only way to treat ADHD.

One of the main effects of ADHD is being unable to remain focused on a specific task. This condition can be especially discouraging for kids because they may have difficulty paying attention during class, finishing homework assignments or taking exams. Adults may struggle to concentrate during a business meeting or a presentation. Adults and children who have had their symptoms treated with traditional therapy or medication may not realize that there are alternative opportunities to treat ADHD and that they can experience success.

While not as widely known, there are natural ways to treat ADHD that do not include harsh side effects commonly associated with traditional prescription drug treatment. Neurofeedback therapy is a natural, non-invasive alternative to treating ADHD. It does not require medication and can be quite effective in helping individuals challenged with ADHD in managing their symptoms and experiencing a greater quality of life.

Neurofeedback therapy can help individuals with ADHD achieve the following:

  • Increased focus
  • Greater motivation
  • Improved attention span
  • Enhanced feelings of achievement

How Neurofeedback Works

During a neurofeedback training session at the Northport Wellness Center, non-invasive surface sensors are placed on the surface of the scalp. The neurofeedback system then translates the individual's brainwaves onto a computer screen for observation. Visual, auditory, or tactile feedback is displayed when the individual is producing a regulated brain-wave pattern that acts as a reward, or positive reinforcement.

Over the course of several training sessions, the brain learns to modify itself and begins producing the appropriate brain waves at the appropriate times. A regulated brain-wave pattern is produced, and reinforced, which helps alleviate symptoms and improve overall performance for long lasting results.

Neurofeedback therapy addresses an individual's focus-attention issues by training the brain to regulate its brain-wave patterns.

Northport Wellness Center neurofeedback provider, Christina Gravinese, recommends three neurofeedback sessions per week. “In order to see really good results really quickly, rather than have the patient or client get discouraged, the more frequent, the better," Gravinese recommends.

According to Dr. Jason Pape, another neurofeedback provider at the Northport Wellness Center, patients should start noticing a positive change in their condition within the first few sessions. “We’d like to see change in the first six to 10 sessions,” Dr. Pape says.

Gravinese says that her clients usually express that they feel a difference within the first five to eight sessions. Those initial responses typically include improved sleep and attention, as well as being more motivated.

If you don’t receive neurofeedback treatment for a period of time and then begin again, you’ll simply “build upon what you did in the past” rather than start from scratch.

The Northport Wellness Center offers a 30-session package, which typically takes approximately 10 weeks to complete. By the end of the 30 sessions, those with ADHD continue to see significant improvements. At that point, it’s up to the individual to decide whether to continue treatment or to stop for a while and resume when they see fit. What's wonderful about neurofeedback therapy is that unlike going to the gym, if you don’t receive neurofeedback treatment for a period of time and then begin again, you’ll simply “build upon what you did in the past,” rather than start from scratch, according to Dr. Pape.

Because each individual's condition is unique, any treatment may vary in the level of success achieved. It's important to consider all options when you're looking for remedies to treat ADHD for yourself or a loved one. Neurofeedback therapy provides a safe, effective and natural way to treat ADHD without harsh or harmful side effects—ideal for those who are interested in holistic health care treatments.
