The Importance of Family Chiropractic Care

Being proactive about health should be a priority for the entire family. The goal is to promote optimal health so every family member can live a full, rewarding life. It is never too late or too early to begin a path to optimal health.

Dr. Alan Sherr, founder of the Northport Wellness Center on Long Island, believes in the importance of incorporating chiropractic care into a family's wellness plan. “Following a good nutrition plan, receiving regular chiropractic adjustments, addressing stress with acupuncture, massage or psychotherapy are all ways to keep tabs on your health,” he says.

Every family member regardless of their age or state of health can benefit from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is not just for adults.

For many reasons, it’s become increasingly common for children to see a chiropractor.

Some parents may be apprehensive about bringing their children to a chiropractor, unaware of the true benefits and effectiveness of this treatment even for children. Like adults, young people—including newborns and toddlers—can suffer from misaligned spines, which can cause unnecessary pain and stress.

A 2016 study in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, & Family Health focused on the effects of pediatric chiropractic care on a five-month old girl who had Erb’s-Duchenne Palsy in her right arm, which is a paralysis disorder. In her case, it was caused during her delivery.

According to the journal, after being treated a few times by her chiropractor, the young girl’s range of motion (ROM) in her affected arm improved. By the seventh visit, the five-month old “showed even more improvements with ROM in her right arm where she was able to reach for toys,” the study said. By her ninth visit, the chiropractor had determined that the infant no longer demonstrated  a difference in range of motion between either arm.

Chiropractic helps improve the function of the body’s nervous system.

The nervous system controls every function in your body, essentially telling your body what to do and when. The brain and the spinal cord play vital roles in the body’s central nervous system. You can take care of your brain by being physically active and practicing good nutrition, and also by addressing the condition of your spinal cord.

Consider your daily routine, for example brushing your teeth  in order to exercise good oral hygiene. This is similar to making it a regular practice to seeing your chiropractor in order to keep your spine healthy. Receiving chiropractic services is a key part of taking care of your spine, because a trusted and certified chiropractor will make the proper adjustments during each session to realign your vertebral column.

Chiropractic does even more than address back pain.

Chiropractic care doesn’t just do wonders for the upper and lower back. There are many benefits of getting adjustments.

For infants and young children, chiropractic adjustments can help them sleep better, making them happier and less fussy. It can also promote greater immune system function, helping them prevent ear infections, migraines and other illnesses.

Adults can reap similar benefits, which include:

  • Neck, knee or ankle pain relief
  • Decrease in blood pressure
  • Increase in range of motion in joints
  • Relieve concussion symptoms
  • Reduce inflammation caused by arthritis

Whether you, your spouse or your children are athletes or simply lead active lifestyles, getting chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial in preventing injuries.

Being proactive with your physical, mental, and emotional health doesn’t just refer to addressing an already-existing problem; it also means taking steps to prevent future issues from developing. Going for a routine adjustment, whether on a weekly or monthly basis, is a great way to accomplish this.

Seeing a trusted chiropractor at your local wellness center can help to make the experience a fun and healthy family outing that everyone will look forward to!
