What is a Brain Injury?

A brain injury is an impairment that directly affects the brain and its functions. Depending on the type and amount of force, a brain injury can cause a number of side effects, including mental confusion, memory loss, persistent headaches and blurred vision. Any damage to the brain should be addressed immediately so that the most ideal treatment plan can be put in place. Awareness about brain injuries in general is increasing and healing and recovery is possible.

The most widely reported cause of brain damage in recent years has been due to people hitting their heads.

The most prevalent victims have been professional athletes, who've banged their heads one too many times on the playing field during their athletic career. These individuals are challenged with the devastating effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and concussions. Even years after they’ve hung up their cleats and retired, their brains still show long-term effects from their injuries.

Unfortunately, student athletes are also at risk of suffering brain damage from injuries that occur on the field. Football players reportedly suffer the highest incidence of TBIs and concussions, however, soccer and hockey players are not immune from them. Still, anyone can experience a brain injury from a jolt to the head, falling, or being involved in a motor-vehicle accident, for example.

Anyone who thinks that they have suffered brain damage should seek medical attention.

A severely impaired brain will impact cognitive and physical functions, such as being able to think, talk or walk. If you believe you or a loved one are suffering from a concussion, do not hesitate to contact your health care provider so that you can start receiving proper treatment and experience the quality of life that you deserve.
