Those who've never undergone a facial may be hesitant to book the multi-step skin treatment out of uncertainty, or fear of how their skin will react. There's really no need to worry, however.

Everyone should at least consider getting a facial.

This is due to the treatment's many potentially positive benefits for the skin.

Facials can help minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and hydrate your skin.

They are also great for those who have acne-prone skin, as a typical session focuses on cleaning and exfoliating a patient’s pores. A 2013 study shared by the U.S. National Library of Medicine concluded that a glycolic acid peel—in which the natural chemical is applied, then peeled off a patient's skin—“is a simple, evidence-based, result-oriented, and cost-effective procedure” that could aid in improving acne and reducing acne scars.

Discussing details about your skin health with a licensed aesthetician will help you make a decision.

The key is to communicate with your aesthetician—a licensed skincare professional—about your skin, as well as any reservations you may have, so he or she can treat it, accordingly. One of the most important qualities of a good aesthetician is to be thorough. This means he or she should take the time to ask you specific questions regarding your skin type, any medications you're taking—topical or capsule, for example—and your overall skin health. This includes addressing specific concerns, such as extreme dryness or oiliness.

This information will help predict how your skin will react after the treatment so your aesthetician can share appropriate, post-facial tips to help ensure the best results, possible. The frequency you should get a facial varies, depending on this data, as well. Those with oily skin may be advised to schedule more appointments than those with dry skin, for instance.

Still, keep in mind that you should also be following a skin care regimen at home.

Just because you regularly get facials does not mean you should neglect your skin in between appointments. Following a skin care regimen that involves cleansing your skin, using natural moisturizers and applying sunscreen on a daily basis plays a major role in your skin’s health, too.

Ask your aesthetician for advice if you are ever unsure about a specific product or practice.
