Who Should Consider Neurofeedback Training?

Neurofeedback training is a unique type of therapy that stimulates the brain positively to help it function more optimally, relieving symptoms of various conditions that negatively impact one's life. Neurofeedback training can help children and adults manage and overcome a variety of challenges and enjoy a more fulfilling and healthier life.

So, who should consider neurofeedback therapy?

Neurofeedback can be successful in addressing the following conditions:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Anxiety
  • Focus-Attention Issues
  • Depression
  • Learning Disabilities (i.e., Dyslexia)
  • Insomnia
  • Stress
  • Weight Loss
  • Sensory Integration Issues
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries

While neurofeedback therapy can help individuals heal and recover from specific diagnosed disorders, it could also benefit anyone who is faced with typical daily stressors, such as driving or excessive computer/cell phone use, according to Northport Wellness Center neurofeedback therapy providers, Christina Gravinese and Dr. Jason Pape.

“One of the biggest misconceptions with neurofeedback is that there has to be something wrong with you to do this,” Ms. Gravinese says. This is just not the case, she explains.

Neurofeedback helps individuals maintain and enhance their health.

Some people seek neurofeedback training to achieve peak performance. Dr. Pape has treated several athletes looking to improve their game. He reports seeing a change in their performance after only a few sessions.

Neurofeedback training can also teach the brain to be more focused. For example, taking a math test or working on a business presentation will become that much easier to perform.

Young people in their 20s and 30s can benefit from neurofeedback training, as it can help them maintain their cognitive health. They look to neurofeedback training to prevent early memory loss or concentration issues down the road, for example.

Neurofeedback addresses issues caused by modern technology.

Considering how people stare at their phones—whether out of necessity or habit—individuals of all ages could probably use a little neurofeedback training.

“So many people don’t realize that with excessive cell phone usage—staring at the screen, scrolling, playing games—you’re training your brain to be in that alpha brain wave where you’re not learning or doing anything,” explains Ms. Gravinese. As a result, she says that the brain goes into a “completely shut-down and prohibited stage and nothing’s being processed in or out. And the more you do that, the more your brain goes off into la la land.”

Is neurofeedback training right for you?

Neurofeedback training is a great way to address issues that prevent you from enjoying your life to the fullest and also an effective way to be proactive with your health. At the Northport Wellness Center, neurofeedback is offered as an individual service and as a component of our Autism Recovery, Concussion Recovery, Depression Recovery, and Cancer Management and Recovery programs.
